Study shows U.S. prebiotic sodas often match sugar with fiber content

A new analysis of 108 U.S. prebiotic sodas launched between 2021 and 2025 finds they average about 35 calories, 5 g of sugar and 5 g of fiber per 12‑ounce can. Nearly two‑thirds of these drinks contain non‑nutritive sweeteners such as stevia, while the segment is one of the fastest‑growing beverage markets, with estimated sales of $777 million in 2025.

Researchers note that many labels claim “no added sugar” yet can hold up to roughly 10 g of total sugars, creating a “health halo” that may mislead consumers about nutritional quality. The findings will be presented at the Nutrition 2026 meeting of the American Society for Nutrition in National Harbor, Maryland, July 25‑28.
