STVR to transition terrestrial broadcasting to DVB-T2 standard

Slovak public broadcaster STVR will transition its terrestrial broadcasting to the DVB-T2 standard on September 22, 2026. This move marks the completion of the technological modernization of terrestrial broadcasting in Slovakia, as all television multiplexes will then operate under the new standard.

Viewers who receive television signals via an antenna will need to retune their devices to continue accessing programs such as Jednotka, Dvojka, Šport, and the news channel 24. While most modern televisions and set-top boxes already support DVB-T2, older devices that only support the original DVB-T standard may lose access to these channels unless a compatible set-top box is used.

According to Marcel Šatánek, CEO of Towercom, the transition allows for more efficient use of broadcasting capacity, which creates opportunities for higher quality broadcasts and the potential expansion of paid television offerings via antenna.
