STVyARA union accuses Argentine government of withholding road funds

The Sindicato de Trabajadores Viales y Afines (STVyARA) has accused the Argentine government of a deliberate ‘ruticidio’ (roadway killing) by withholding funds intended for national road infrastructure. According to union documentation, between 2024 and May 2026, approximately 1.5 trillion pesos were collected for road works, but only about 400 billion pesos were actually executed. The union claims the Ministry of Economy is holding over 1 trillion pesos in fixed-term deposits and public securities to maintain fiscal balance.

STVyARA Secretary General Graciela Aleñá argues that the administration is intentionally defunding Vialidad Nacional to justify the privatization of 26 new national road segments and the implementation of tolls across 9,000 kilometers of the national network. The union also expressed concern over a voluntary retirement program that reduces technical staff while the agency is tasked with auditing new private concessions.

Separately, government officials recently met with representatives of the Argentine Federation of Road Workers in Tierra del Fuego to discuss regional challenges and the federal nature of the sector's activities.
