Styrian sports face major funding cuts from sponsors and state
Elite sports in Styria, Austria, are facing significant financial setbacks due to simultaneous cuts in corporate sponsorship and government funding.
Starting in 2027, Holding Graz will end its sponsorship agreements with three major professional clubs in Graz: SK Sturm (approximately 500,000 euros), GAK (300,000 euros), and the 99ers (200,000 euros). SK Sturm President Christian Jauk noted that the engagement was a sponsorship rather than a subsidy, emphasizing that the company receives advertising value exceeding the financial commitment.
Concurrently, the proposed 2027 Styrian state budget includes a reduction in sports funding of approximately ten percent. The global sports budget is projected to drop from roughly 11.47 million euros to approximately 10.34 million euros. Specific areas are expected to see sharper declines, including a 16.2 percent decrease in funding for top-tier team sports.
Political reactions have been critical, with SPÖ leader Max Lercher condemning the savings plans of the FPÖ-ÖVP state government. Sports officials, including Markus Pichler of the Styrian Sports Union, have expressed concern that the financial limit for organized sports has been reached.
