Subaru to End e-Boxer Mild‑Hybrid Lineup, Shift to Full Hybrids and New Manual Models

Subaru announced that it will discontinue the e‑Boxer mild‑hybrid system, with orders for the Impreza and Crosstrek versions ending in September 2026. The company will replace the mild‑hybrid powertrain with a full‑hybrid system based on Toyota’s S:HEV technology, pairing a 2.5‑litre boxer engine with two electric motors and a CVT. The move is driven by stricter emissions regulations and a broader strategy to expand electrification.

At the same time, Subaru unveiled three new sport‑focused models that will all receive a six‑speed manual gearbox: an updated WRX sedan, a new five‑door hatchback, and a lightweight BRZ‑type coupe. These vehicles are scheduled for market launch by the end of 2027 and are intended to showcase technology from Subaru’s motorsport program.

The transition marks a shift in Subaru’s product portfolio toward pure‑gasoline models, more powerful full hybrids, and fully electric offerings, while retaining a niche manual‑driven line for enthusiasts.
