Submarine Magnitude‑6.2 Earthquake Strikes Southern Italy, Felt Across Balkans

A deep offshore earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck the Tirens Sea off the coast of Calabria, Italy, at 00:12 local time. The epicenter was located opposite the town of Paola, about three hours south of Naples, at a depth of roughly 250 km. Measurements were reported by Italy’s National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Austria’s GeoSphere service.

Because the quake occurred under deep water, experts expect limited material damage. Italian fire services received no emergency calls and no injuries were reported. The shaking was perceptible across a wide area of southern Italy, including Sicily, and was felt by residents of parts of the Balkan Peninsula up to 600 km from the epicenter. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
