Submer Group to invest up to €1.5 bn in AI data centre at Flix, Spain
Submer Group announced a multi‑year investment of between €1.0 bn and €1.5 bn to build a hyperscale artificial‑intelligence data centre on the former Ercros chemical‑plant site in Flix, Tarragona, Catalonia. The project will be developed and operated by Rubix Data Centers and will use Submer’s proprietary immersion liquid‑cooling technology, which reduces water consumption.
The centre will be powered by an installed capacity of 85‑90 MW supplied by Ercros’s existing grid connections, supplemented by an additional 20 MW purchased from a third‑party IT provider. Construction is planned in two phases, with the first phase delivering 105‑150 high‑skill permanent jobs and aiming for partial operation by 2027 and full capacity by 2029.
The Catalan government, represented by President Salvador Illa and the Department of Enterprise and Work, backs the project as a flagship of the region’s reindustrialisation strategy, intended to replace the former chemical activity with a sustainable, technology‑driven economic hub. Local officials highlighted the expected “virtuous circle” of attracting further companies and revitalising the Terres de l’Ebre area.
