Sudan army retakes key highway as RSF vows escalation

The Sudanese Armed Forces have recaptured the main highway linking Khartoum with El‑Obeid in North Kordofan, taking control of the towns of Bara, Jabra al‑Sheikh and the Umm Sayala area. In response, Rapid Support Forces (RSF) leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, issued a video message ordering his troops to change tactics, warning “no sleep… it is do or die” and urging fighters not to hold back.

RSF has launched drone strikes in the region, including a strike on Al‑Jamama village that killed nine civilians and injured fourteen. UN Women warned that women in El Obeid face daytime drone attacks and sexual violence at night, leaving them with “no safe window” for daily activities. Secret monitoring teams of Sudan’s National Commission for Human Rights have documented nearly 4,000 cases of sexual violence in Darfur, with 20 % of victims under 18.

A United Nations investigative mechanism has concluded that the RSF and allied militias committed genocide in Darfur, citing mass killings, gang rapes and forced starvation. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed over 200,000 people, displaced more than 11 million, and left 33 million Sudanese in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
