Sudan bread crisis threatens to expand hunger in Khartoum
A severe bread crisis in Khartoum is heightening fears of widespread famine across Sudan, where approximately 20 million people face acute food insecurity. The price of a single loaf of bread in the capital doubled from 250 to 500 Sudanese pounds in just one week.
Many bakeries have been forced to close due to a lack of flour and rising fuel costs required to run generators during frequent power outages. The crisis is compounded by the rapid devaluation of the Sudanese pound, which fell 25 percent against the US dollar in the last month. Before the conflict, the exchange rate was 500 pounds per dollar, but it recently reached levels exceeding 10,000 pounds per dollar.
Local residents report that families are being forced to reduce bread consumption to a single meal per day. Bakeries struggle to remain operational as the cost of production often exceeds the retail price they can afford to charge the public.
