Sudan cholera outbreak threatens to worsen as conflict and rains hinder response

The World Health Organization warned that Sudan's cholera outbreak, declared on June 27, is at risk of escalating. More than 1,300 confirmed cases and 114 deaths have been reported, giving a case‑fatality rate of 13.7%. The disease is spreading across several states, especially Darfur and Kordofan, where ongoing armed fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces restricts humanitarian access.

Heavy seasonal rains are expected to aggravate the situation by contaminating water sources and overwhelming already strained health facilities. Sudan faces the world’s largest humanitarian emergency, with over 33 million people needing assistance and 21 million requiring health services. About 13.4 million are displaced, including roughly 9 million internally and 4.6 million who have crossed borders. WHO representative Shible Sahbani called for expanded vaccination, safe drinking water, sanitation measures and rapid delivery of medical supplies to avert a larger catastrophe.

International partners have pre‑positioned 64 metric tonnes of cholera kits, but additional support is urgently required to protect vulnerable communities.
