Sudan civil war pushes millions toward famine as rains loom

The three‑year civil war in Sudan has created one of the world’s gravest humanitarian crises. United Nations agencies, including the FAO, World Food Programme and UNICEF, warn that about 19.5 million people – roughly 40% of the population – face acute food insecurity. Approximately 14 million are in Phase 3 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, indicating acute hunger, over five million are in Phase 4 (humanitarian emergency), and around 135 000 are in Phase 5, where conditions approach famine.

The UN cautions that the situation will worsen during the June‑September rainy season, saying “the situation is expected to further deteriorate during the rainy season.” Fighting between the Rapid Support Forces and government troops, especially in the Darfur region, has blocked aid convoys and strained food and medical supplies. The agencies are calling for an immediate cease‑fire, protection of civilians and infrastructure, and a boost in international funding to address the looming catastrophe.
