Sudan civilian vehicle drone attacks kill more than 20 people

Rights groups say a series of drone strikes on civilian vehicles heading to weddings and other social gatherings in Sudan have killed over 20 people. One attack on the outskirts of Khartoum killed ten civilians, including five women from the same family. The day before, a strike in al‑Shaatout, North Kordofan, killed 13 civilians, also many women, as they travelled to a wedding. A further strike near a water facility killed two people.

The Sudan Doctors Network and Emergency Lawyers attribute the attacks to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and describe the strikes as deliberate, using guided drones. They have called on the international community to pressure RSF leadership to stop targeting civilians. The incidents occur amid a war that began in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and the RSF, which has already caused at least 59,000 deaths, displaced roughly 13 million people and driven large parts of the country toward famine.
