Sudan conflict deepens as mothers walk for nutrition aid and health facilities are destroyed

UNICEF’s Sudan representative Sheldon Yett said displaced mothers in South Kordofan are trekking kilometers on foot to reach UNICEF‑supported nutrition centres, where severely malnourished infants receive weeks of treatment. He warned that without adequately stocked and staffed health facilities, children’s conditions will continue to worsen. The UN humanitarian appeal for Sudan is funded at only 39%, leaving millions without comprehensive assistance; about 11 million have received some aid, but only one in six received full multisector support.

In North Kordofan, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) destroyed the Al‑Rahad medical centre, wiping out the pharmacy, imaging units, operating rooms and other essential services, and also targeted the municipal cleaning authority. The conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (“Hemeti”) and commanded by General Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan, has caused over 200 000 deaths and displaced millions, with armed groups proliferating across the warzone.
