Sudan conflict intensifies as military reports RSF defections

The conflict in Sudan is intensifying across multiple fronts, including Kordofan, Darfur, and the Blue Nile region. Recent military activity has seen 55 land battles recorded between late July and mid-August 2026, resulting in shifting control of strategic areas. In North Kordofan, attacks on the villages of Um Dareisa and Ash-Shakla killed six civilians and forced over 1,000 people to flee toward El-Obeid, a city already hosting more than 100,000 displaced persons.

Amidst the fighting, the Sudanese Army has reported a significant wave of defections from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The military announced the completion of the first phase of regularizing the status of defectors, including a recent group of over 300 fighters who surrendered in the Northern State. These defectors are undergoing security and administrative vetting to be integrated into the army's units.

Military experts note that the continuous flow of weapons to both sides, driven by external relations, complicates efforts to reach a settlement. While the RSF has utilized advanced drones and jamming equipment in the Blue Nile, the army has recently displayed new heavy weaponry and aircraft in Khartoum.
