Sudan displacement rises as conflict and floods intensify
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is intensifying as an additional 200,000 people have been displaced due to ongoing conflict and severe seasonal flooding. Since the war began in April 2023, an estimated 8.6 million people have fled their homes.
In the Kordofan region, fighting and drone strikes have targeted vital infrastructure, such as electrical transformers in El Obeid, causing prolonged power outages that affect water pumping and healthcare. In North Darfur, heavy rainfall has destroyed or damaged approximately 1,350 shelters, forcing thousands of families into temporary accommodations.
International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope stated that the convergence of violence, damaged infrastructure, and floods is leaving families without access to water, electricity, and healthcare. The IOM also warned that relief efforts are being hindered by global supply chain delays, particularly through the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
