Sudan agriculture faces crisis from El Nino and conflict

Sudan is facing a severe agricultural and humanitarian crisis driven by a combination of conflict, economic instability, and extreme weather. The Gedaref region, a vital agricultural hub for sorghum and sesame, is under intense pressure as delayed rains and rising fuel and fertilizer costs disrupt planting cycles.

Climate patterns, specifically El Nino, have caused Nile water levels to drop and delayed essential rainfall, leaving vast areas of farmland fallow. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization has noted that the season is operating under heightened climate risk, including frequent dry spells.

The humanitarian situation is compounded by an ongoing war between the Sudanese army and rival paramilitaries, which has resulted in over 200,000 deaths since April 2023. According to the IPC, 24.6 million people faced acute food insecurity in October 2024, with projections suggesting 21.2 million people will remain in crisis through May 2026.
