Sudan faces cholera and measles outbreak endangering over 200,000 amid food and medicine shortages

More than 200,000 people, including over 20,000 children, are at risk of cholera and measles in Bara, North Kordofan, Sudan, as shortages of food, medicines and clean water worsen humanitarian conditions. Health centres have recorded over 100 measles cases and at least 45 cholera cases, while the Sudanese Health Ministry later reported 911 cholera infections and 127 deaths in North and West Kordofan.

The United Nations and aid agencies have warned that continued disruptions in medical‑supply chains and impeded humanitarian deliveries could trigger a large‑scale health disaster, especially for vulnerable groups. They called for the urgent provision of vaccines, serum, antibiotics, food, and safe drinking water to prevent further civilian deaths. The outbreak occurs against the backdrop of ongoing conflict between Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (HDK) that began in April 2023, displacing millions and contributing to widespread famine risk.
