Sudan faces famine risk as war and drought escalate humanitarian crisis
Sudan is facing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis as ongoing conflict and severe drought push large regions toward famine. The United Nations has warned that fighting shows no signs of slowing, with the conflict having already displaced approximately 13 million people and caused tens of thousands of deaths since April 2023.
In Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) reports that malnutrition rates in some displaced person camps have reached levels indicative of famine. Drought now affects more than half of Sudan, damaging crops and depleting the incomes of agricultural communities.
In neighboring South Sudan, the situation is equally dire. The World Food Programme (WFP) reports that 7.8 million people struggle daily to find food. The agency is facing significant funding shortages, including an immediate $86 million gap and a projected $416 million shortfall over the next six months, which threatens life-saving assistance for millions of vulnerable people.
