Sudan faces worsening humanitarian crisis and stalled peace efforts

Sudan continues to face a severe humanitarian crisis and political instability as its three-year war persists. United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher has called on the international community to overcome political indifference, noting that more than two-thirds of the population requires vital assistance, including food, water, and medicine.

Fletcher emphasized that the tragedy is driven by a lack of political will rather than a lack of solutions, warning that the influx of weapons, drones, and foreign combatants is prolonging the suffering. He urged for courageous diplomacy to prioritize civilian protection and address regional interests that treat Sudanese resources and territory as stakes in a power struggle.

In an attempt to find a political resolution, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, head of the Sudanese army, launched a national dialogue initiative. The preparatory committee held its first session on August 30 to define an inclusive framework for peace. However, the process faces significant challenges, including deep mistrust among stakeholders and opposition from civil society and political groups who argue that dialogue cannot succeed without a prior ceasefire. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) also remain focused on military engagement rather than negotiations.
