Sudan healthcare system nears collapse due to aid cuts
Sudan’s healthcare system is nearing collapse as international aid cuts force the closure of dozens of medical facilities. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) reported that 36 of its supported sites are closing, a move expected to deprive approximately 473,700 people of essential healthcare services.
Aid organizations, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF), warn that declining funding is overwhelming the remaining operational hospitals. MSF noted that as other clinics close, patient admissions in areas like Central Darfur have surged. The crisis is exacerbated by the fact that the United Nations' humanitarian response plan for Sudan is currently only 41 percent funded.
The reduction in support follows the end of USAID grants in June and decreased assistance from European institutions. These funding gaps come amidst a brutal civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which has already displaced millions and left roughly 37 percent of the country’s health facilities nonoperational.
