Sudan healthcare system crisis

Overview

Sudan’s healthcare system is approaching collapse as international aid cuts force the closure of numerous medical facilities. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) reported that 36 of its supported sites are closing, a move expected to deprive approximately 473,700 people of essential healthcare services.

Aid organizations, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF), have warned that declining funding is overwhelming remaining operational hospitals. MSF noted that as other clinics close, patient admissions in areas such as Central Darfur have surged. The crisis is compounded by the fact that the United Nations' humanitarian response plan for Sudan is currently only 41 percent funded.

The reduction in support follows the conclusion of USAID grants in June and decreased assistance from European institutions. These funding gaps occur amidst a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which has already displaced millions and left roughly 37 percent of the country’s health facilities nonoperational.
