Sudan humanitarian crisis deepens as Amnesty calls for arms embargo

Three years after the war began in Sudan, Amnesty International warns that the conflict’s brutal offensives have intensified, leaving roughly half of the 25 million‑person population directly or indirectly affected. The United Nations has described the situation as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with at least 150,000 deaths and 12 million people displaced.

Amnesty urges an immediate arms embargo on Sudan, the creation of safe corridors for civilians fleeing bombed cities, and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid. The Italian government has pledged more than €125 million to address the emergency and has called for a halt to all Italian arms exports to the United Arab Emirates and other nations involved in the fighting, while prioritising aid to Darfur and other famine‑risk regions.
