The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has warned that about 35 million Sudanese need humanitarian assistance, with more than 9 million internally displaced and 4.5 million having fled as refugees. IFRC Special Envoy Derk Segaar said the response is funded at only about 35 % of the required resources. The conflict that began in April 2023 between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has caused at least 59 000 deaths and has left large parts of the country without reliable electricity, clean water and health services, increasing the risk of cholera, malnutrition and floods. Sudanese Army Lieutenant‑General Yasser al‑Atta announced that the army is advancing on all fronts with the aim of eliminating the RSF before the end of the year. In addition, Christian partners are providing nutrition and health care to thousands of children, pregnant and breastfeeding women in West Darfur. Separate reports from Darfur warn of an imminent famine driven by drought, soaring food prices and disrupted trade, with market prices for staples such as millet and sugar reaching record levels and cholera outbreaks threatening displaced populations.
