Sudan humanitarian crisis worsens amid rising violence and food shortages
United Nations humanitarian agencies have expressed grave concern over escalating violence, rising displacement, and worsening food insecurity in Sudan. Recent clashes in East and South Darfur have resulted in at least 13 deaths and forced more than 400 people to flee their homes. Conflict in markets, such as Al Borsa in El Daein and Abuja in Gereida, has disrupted local commerce and led to partial closures.
Ongoing fighting in North and South Kordofan, Blue Nile, and North Darfur continues to drive mass displacement, with humanitarian partners reporting several thousand new refugees over the past week. Additionally, UNICEF reported that drone strikes hit two warehouses in the Shikan region of North Kordofan on September 20, destroying educational materials intended for the start of the school year. Similar drone attacks were reported in El Obeid.
Food shortages are reaching critical levels. In Tawila, North Darfur, bread has been unavailable in local markets for four consecutive days due to rising tensions and price spikes. The World Food Programme has noted a 13 percent increase in local food basket prices compared to the previous month.
