Sudan humanitarian crisis worsens as displacement and violence escalate

Humanitarian conditions are rapidly deteriorating in Sudan as ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) drives mass displacement. In the North Kordofan province, the city of El Obeid is facing extreme overcrowding. Since mid-July, more than 15,000 families have arrived in the area, joining hundreds of thousands who fled earlier this year. Many arrivals are traveling on foot with minimal possessions, and an estimated 85% of those displaced are women and children.

The United Nations has warned that escalating violence across multiple regions, including Blue Nile and West Darfur, continues to endanger civilians. Reports indicate drone strikes, village attacks, and the looting of livestock and property. In West Darfur, a drone strike on a fuel market near the Chadian border resulted in civilian casualties.

Furthermore, the UN’s Humanitarian Coordinator, Denise Brown, has condemned the detention of aid workers by non-state armed groups. She described these detentions as unacceptable, noting that they disrupt critical operations and jeopardize the safety of personnel. The UN is calling for the immediate release of detained workers and urging all parties to respect international humanitarian law.
