Sudan military chief Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan accused of stalling US‑backed peace plan

Senior member of Sudan’s Somoud alliance, Khalid Omar Youssef, alleges that army chief Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan is deliberately delaying a U.S.‑mediated humanitarian truce. He says the Sudanese Armed Forces accepted most elements of the proposal but rejected a clause for a limited withdrawal, instead demanding the Rapid Support Forces pull out of all areas it has held since May 2023. Youssef claims this stance shows Burhan’s intent to prolong the war to preserve his power.

In a separate document, Burhan outlines a five‑year transition plan featuring a technocratic government and a national dialogue restricted to forces “not stained with the blood of the people.” The plan rejects foreign‑sponsored solutions and seeks backing from Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Analysts warn that these unilateral moves could further delay a comprehensive political settlement and extend the conflict.
