Sudan war drives mass displacement and starvation in Chad refugee camps

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) launched a sweeping offensive on June 15 in North Darfur’s Orchi area, burning ten villages, looting markets and destroying the local reservoir. Thousands of families fled across the border into Chad, where they now live under trees in the Iridimi camp with little food, water or shelter. Survivors describe drinking contaminated puddle water, eating leaves and fearing continual drone patrols that target remaining water sources and livestock.

In Sudan, the three‑year conflict has left civilians with severe injuries and loss. Survivors recount amputations, shrapnel wounds, and the death of family members. Many face ongoing medical needs, lack of prosthetics, and the challenge of rebuilding lives while coping with trauma. The humanitarian crisis underscores the widespread human suffering caused by the war.
