Sudan conflict drives massive hunger and displacement

The civil war in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces led by Gen. Abdel Fattah al‑Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), has created one of the world’s largest humanitarian emergencies. More than 14 million people have been displaced and roughly 34 million – about 10 % of global needs – require urgent humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations estimates that 19.5 million Sudanese face acute hunger while 4.5 million have fled the country. In response, the United States imposed a new round of sanctions on the Sudanese Armed Forces for alleged use of chemical weapons in 2024, an accusation the Sudanese government denies. Experts say the conflict has expanded regionally, involving neighboring states and Middle‑Eastern powers, yet it remains under‑reported as global attention focuses on other crises.
