Sudanese refugees in Chad face acute water shortage
In Goudrane and Adre camps in eastern Chad, approximately 50,000 Sudanese refugees have been living under severe water scarcity. After water tanks ran dry for four days, a water truck arrived with 6,000 litres (1,585 gallons) of water, which was taken up within ten minutes by crowds desperate for the supply.
The United Nations reports that more than 938,000 Sudanese have fled to Chad since the war began in April 2023. Many now survive on less than half the minimum daily water amount recommended by the UNHCR, raising health and humanitarian concerns. Personal accounts, such as that of 43‑year‑old teacher Rokhia Ibrahim, describe the trauma of escape and the ongoing struggle to secure basic water, with her family suffering violent attacks by Rapid Support Forces fighters.
