Sudanese youth seek greater role in peacebuilding and recovery

Young Sudanese professionals, entrepreneurs, and students are calling for a more significant role in the country’s peacebuilding and recovery efforts. During consultations in Khartoum conducted by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), participants highlighted how ongoing conflict has severely exacerbated existing economic challenges.

Key obstacles identified include a lack of formal employment, limited access to affordable training, and difficulty securing financing to start businesses. The conflict has further disrupted markets, closed businesses, and caused widespread displacement, making it harder for youth to secure livelihoods. Many participants noted that formal job opportunities are scarce, often requiring personal connections, while the informal sector remains the primary source of work.
