Sugar markets face volatility amid Brazilian supply concerns and weak demand
The global sugar market is facing conflicting signals regarding supply and demand. In Brazil, concerns are rising over the ability of mills in the Center-South region to process available sugarcane. While cane availability appears high, maintenance requirements and weather conditions may limit actual sugar production. Some estimates for sugar production are being revised downward, with Itaú BBA projecting 38.9 million tons, while others suggest the previous 40 million ton average was overly optimistic.
Simultaneously, international sugar prices have faced downward pressure in New York and London due to signs of weakening demand. High volumes of open contracts for October delivery in New York suggest significant physical deliveries, which market analysts interpret as a sign of softer demand. Additionally, StoneX has reduced its global sugar deficit forecast for 2026/27 to 900,000 tons, down from a previous estimate of 1.7 million tons. High levels of long positions held by commodity funds also remain a point of caution for market volatility.
