Global sugar supply volatility and climate disruptions

Overview

Global sugar prices have experienced significant volatility, recently surging toward two-year highs due to intensifying supply concerns. While market signals were mixed in mid-September—with some analysts citing weak demand and record-breaking contract deliveries—the outlook has shifted back toward a deficit driven by severe weather.

In Brazil, the Center-South region faces a critical harvest disruption. Heavy rainfall, linked to El Niño, has caused the wettest winter in 110 years in the Piracicaba region, hindering machinery operation and milling. Datagro reports that cane milling per mill dropped significantly by late September, with an estimated 35 million tons of sugarcane potentially left in fields until March. Consequently, S&P reduced its Brazilian production estimate by 2 million tonnes, causing the projected global surplus for 2026/27 to fall from 3.9 million tonnes to less than 0.4 million tonnes.

Other major producers face similar climate-related pressures. In Thailand, production is anticipated to drop by 17% for the 2026/27 cycle. India’s production is also threatened by a weak monsoon, with the International Sugar Organization noting negative consequences for the 2026/27 and 2027/28 cycles. In Argentina, producers in Tucumán have called for an agricultural emergency declaration as intense rainfall and soil saturation cause harvest delays of approximately 20%, threatening the viability of small and medium-sized farms.
