Sugar rationing in infancy linked to long-term health benefits
A study published in PNAS, utilizing data from the UK Biobank, has analyzed the long-term health impacts of sugar consumption during the first 1,000 days of life. Researchers examined over 64,000 individuals born in the United Kingdom between 1951 and 1956, leveraging a unique historical circumstance: the end of post-war sugar rationing in September 1953.
Individuals born before the end of rationing experienced limited sugar access during critical developmental stages, from conception to age two. In contrast, those born shortly after saw average daily sugar intake nearly double almost overnight. The findings suggest that lower sugar exposure during this period is associated with a 23 per cent lower chance of developing dementia, as well as reduced risks of certain cancers and slower biological aging.
While the study highlights a significant link between early childhood diet and long-term health, some experts note limitations. Critics point out that the study relies on birth cohorts rather than direct dietary measurements and that dementia symptoms often manifest decades after initial brain changes. Nevertheless, the research underscores the importance of metabolic health and taste preference formation in early childhood.
