Sugarcane producers face crisis due to climate impacts
The global sugar industry is facing significant disruptions due to adverse weather conditions and climate factors. In India, the world’s second-largest producer, El Niño has damaged sugarcane harvests, impacting consumers, farmers, and national energy security goals.
In Tucumán, Argentina, sugarcane producers are calling for a declaration of agricultural emergency. The Regional Committee of Sugarcane and Alcohol Producers reported that intense rainfall and soil saturation have caused a harvest delay of approximately 20% compared to normal years. Producers warned that if current conditions persist, a significant portion of the cane may remain unharvested, threatening the economic viability of small and medium-sized farms. Representatives are seeking meetings with Governor Osvaldo Jaldo or Economy Minister Daniel Abad to request financing tools and emergency measures to mitigate losses caused by inflation and climate-related logistical difficulties.
