Suhyup Central Federation seeks protections for fisheries under offshore wind law

The Suhyup Central Federation has called for the effective implementation of the Special Act on Offshore Wind Power to ensure the protection of fishermen and the fishing industry. During a recent policy meeting involving officials from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the federation submitted a formal proposal to the government.

The proposal emphasizes three core demands: prioritizing the protection of major fishing grounds and aquaculture farms when designating preliminary offshore wind zones, establishing a public-private consultative body that guarantees the participation and meaningful input of fishermen, and providing institutional support to activate profit-sharing systems for those in the industry.

Suhyup leadership expressed concerns that rapid development without adequate safeguards could lead to significant damage to the fishing industry. They emphasized the need for the government to ensure that the spirit of the Special Act is reflected in local fishing communities to foster coexistence between offshore wind energy and the fisheries sector.
