South Korean fisheries and offshore wind cooperation
Overview
The Suhyup Central Federation has initiated efforts to integrate the fishing industry into South Korea’s offshore wind power development. In September 2026, the federation held a seminar focused on building expertise in project analysis and financial management. This initiative, following a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Development Bank, aims to create a profit-sharing model to benefit local fishing communities located near wind farm sites.
By October 2026, the federation shifted toward policy advocacy, calling for the effective implementation of the Special Act on Offshore Wind Power. During meetings with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, Suhyup submitted a proposal requesting the protection of major fishing grounds and aquaculture farms during the designation of wind zones. The federation also demanded the establishment of a public-private consultative body to ensure fishermen have meaningful input and institutional support for profit-sharing systems.
