Suichuan County landslide kills 13 after heavy rainfall

A severe landslide triggered by heavy rainfall from Typhoon Saede struck Mingkeng Village in Gaoping Town, Suichuan County, Jiangxi Province, on the early morning of September 5. The disaster resulted in 13 fatalities and caused significant damage to residential structures, with 12 houses affected and eight completely destroyed.

The incident occurred in an area previously classified as a low-risk zone for landslides due to its stable terrain and dense vegetation. Experts noted several anomalies: extreme rainfall exceeding 600mm over six days, a chain-reaction disaster pattern where mountain collapses triggered valley mudflows, and high concealment due to the lush landscape.

Following the event, local authorities reported disruptions to electricity, water, and communication networks. Emergency response teams utilized life detection equipment to conduct search and rescue operations. The disaster highlights a growing trend where geological hazards are increasingly occurring in non-traditional risk areas and during unpredictable weather patterns driven by climate change.
