Sulfuric acid spill in Sonora triggers environmental emergency

An environmental emergency is underway in Sonora, Mexico, following a truck accident that spilled approximately 12,000 liters of sulfuric acid. The incident occurred on September 1 near kilometer 97 of the highway connecting Cananea and Ímuris.

The accident involved a tractor-trailer transporting the corrosive substance from a smelting plant in Nacozari toward the Cobre del Mayo mine in Álamos. Emergency responders used slaked lime to neutralize the acid on the soil and roadway.

The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has imposed a temporary total closure of the affected polygon to prevent further ecological damage and protect the local population. While the specific impact area is restricted, the highway remains open to traffic. Profepa inspectors are conducting technical assessments to determine the extent of the damage to soil and vegetation and to establish legal responsibilities for remediation.
