Sulfuric acid spill in Sonora, Mexico

Overview

On September 1, a double-tanker truck owned by Express Milac overturned on the Ímuris-Cananea highway in Sonora, Mexico. The accident resulted in the spill of approximately 12,000 liters of highly corrosive sulfuric acid, which affected the asphalt roadway and roughly 200 linear meters of natural soil.

The spill occurred while the substance was being transported from a smelting plant in Nacozari toward the Cobre del Mayo mine in Álamos. Emergency response efforts were complicated by a rainstorm that triggered an exothermic reaction when the acid contacted water, creating risks of heat and toxic smoke.

Authorities, including Profepa, Semarnat, and Civil Protection, utilized hydrated lime to neutralize the substance. While the highway was temporarily closed for approximately 15 hours for cleaning and recovery, Profepa has since imposed a temporary total closure of the affected polygon to prevent further ecological damage. Technical inspections are ongoing to assess the impact on soil and vegetation and to establish administrative and legal responsibilities for remediation.
