Sulphuric Acid Leak on D1 Highway Forces Fuel Station Closure in Slovakia

A truck carrying sulphuric acid leaked the chemical on the D1 highway northbound toward Košice, near the Janovík rest area. The spill was detected by a nearby fuel station, which was shut down indefinitely, and the highway’s on‑ramp toward Nová Polhora was closed with police directing traffic. Emergency crews deployed 17 firefighters with eight vehicles and specialized equipment to contain the leak and pump the acid to another container. Authorities said the situation remains unstable but under control, and no danger to the public has been reported.

The incident prompted a crisis‑team decision on further measures, while drivers were urged to follow police instructions and avoid the affected section.
