Argentina 2027 Budget proposes major disability and pension reforms FAST-MOVING
The Argentine government has submitted its 2027 Budget proposal to Congress, sparking significant political tension over proposed changes to disability and social security protections. The draft includes measures to repeal key articles of the National Disability Emergency Law and shifts the criteria for disability pensions from a social model to a labor invalidity model. Under this proposal, non-contributory disability pensions would be set at 70% of the minimum pension and would be incompatible with formal employment.
Additional controversial measures include the removal of the single fee for service providers, allowing health insurance companies and prepayments to set their own rates, and the repeal of guaranteed medical coverage for certain non-contributory pensionholders. The proposal has caused friction between the executive branch and its legislative allies, who had previously negotiated different terms to protect disability rights.
Economically, the budget projects 4% GDP growth and 18% inflation for 2027. ANSES also estimates a reduction of approximately 104,760 retirees by 2027, driven by stricter requirements for years of contributions and the expiration of pension moratoriums.
