Sumatra disaster recovery: 39 affected regions return to normal

Recovery efforts continue across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra following major disasters. Currently, 39 out of 53 affected regencies and cities have returned to normal status, with national access restored, basic services operational, and market activities resuming.

To expedite the recovery of residents, President Prabowo Subianto has ordered that the construction timeline for permanent housing (Huntap) be reduced from three years to two years. This directive aims to help affected communities rebuild their lives more quickly.

As of early October 2026, the scale of damage includes over 184,000 damaged homes. Regarding housing progress, 2,085 permanent housing units have been completed out of a target of 57,027, representing approximately 3.26 percent of the total requirement. Additionally, 1,862 units are currently under construction. Temporary housing (Huntara) has seen significant progress, with 20,770 units completed, reaching 99.8 percent of the target.

While most areas have stabilized, eleven regencies and cities still require special attention. Specifically, Central Tapanuli and North Tapanuli are still managing infrastructure repairs and administrative tasks, including the completion of village offices.
