Lombok Barat earthquake triggered by Indo-Australian Plate deformation

A magnitude 5.0 to 5.2 earthquake struck West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on Wednesday morning, October 7, 2026, at approximately 04:15 WITA. The tremor was felt strongly in Mataram, with intensities reaching IV to V on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, and was also felt in parts of Lombok, Sumbawa, and Bali.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake was caused by rock deformation within the subduction zone of the Indo-Australian Plate. The Indonesian Disaster Expert Association (IABI) clarified that this was an intraslab earthquake originating from internal deformation of the Australian Plate subducting beneath the Lombok-Bali region, rather than a shallow crustal earthquake caused by active faults on Lombok island.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 82 kilometers. BMKG confirmed that the event posed no threat of a tsunami. Authorities have advised the public to remain calm, avoid damaged buildings, and rely only on official information to prevent the spread of misinformation.
