Summer Walker sued by Interscope and UMG for $50 million
Universal Music Group (UMG) and Interscope Records have filed a lawsuit against R&B artist Summer Walker, seeking damages exceeding $50 million. The legal action follows Walker's August attempt to terminate her recording agreement, citing California’s seven-year statute which allows artists to exit certain personal services contracts.
Interscope contends that Walker has not fulfilled her contractual obligations, alleging she still owes the label two studio albums and an EP. The labels argue that two of her previous projects did not count toward the original agreement. UMG claims the lawsuit is necessary to preserve its contractual rights before statutory deadlines expire.
Walker’s legal counsel has expressed confidence in her position, stating they intend to vigorously defend her right to challenge the enforceability of the contract. The dispute highlights the complexities of recording agreements and the potential financial consequences for artists seeking independence.
