Summer Walker facing dual legal battles

Overview

Universal Music Group (UMG) and Interscope Records have filed a lawsuit against R&B artist Summer Walker in Los Angeles County Superior Court, seeking damages exceeding $50 million.

The litigation follows Walker’s August attempt to terminate her recording agreement by invoking California’s seven-year rule, which allows individuals to exit certain personal-service contracts. Interscope contends that Walker has failed to fulfill her obligations under a 2017 joint deal with the label and Love Renaissance. While Walker has released three studio albums, the label maintains she still owes two additional studio albums and an EP, arguing that certain previous projects do not count toward the original agreement.

Walker’s legal situation has expanded to include a separate lawsuit filed by the artist against Love Renaissance Records (LVRN), the management firm and independent label that originally signed her. In this complaint, Walker accuses LVRN of fraud, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty. She alleges the firm used “oppressive terms” to maintain excessive control over her career and misappropriated funds from her recording, touring, and merchandising budgets.

Furthermore, Walker claims LVRN withheld revenue from Amazon and YouTube merchandise sales and operated an unauthorized YouTube channel in her name. She is seeking to have her contract with LVRN declared void and unenforceable. Walker’s attorney, Keith Moten, previously stated the singer intends to “vigorously defend her right to challenge the contract's enforceability.”
