Sunarp provides guidance for used vehicle purchases

The National Superintendency of Public Registries (Sunarp) has issued guidance for citizens looking to purchase used vehicles to ensure legal security and proper ownership transfer.

Before finalizing a purchase, buyers are advised to verify the vehicle's registration status to identify potential liens, encumbrances, theft reports, or existing liens. Key steps include requesting a Vehicle Registration Certificate and checking the Mobile Guarantee Information System (SIGM) for any registered guarantees. Additionally, buyers should consult the Tax Administration Service (SAT) to check for outstanding fines or other obligations.

To formalize the transaction, both the buyer and seller must visit a notary to sign the vehicle transfer deed. Once signed, the transfer must be registered in the Vehicle Property Registry to ensure the new owner is officially recognized as the titleholder.
