Anak Krakatau remains at Level III alert as search for missing journalists continues
Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Siaga) alert status following continuous microtremors recorded in the Sunda Strait. Seismographic data shows tremors with amplitudes between 1 and 6 mm, indicating ongoing magma and gas movement beneath the crater.
Parallel to the volcanic activity, the search for five journalists and three crew members of the KM Arupadatu I, who went missing while covering the volcano, has concluded its official phase. The 10-day search and rescue operation was officially terminated on September 17, 2026.
In response to the termination of official efforts, the Indonesian Press Photo Society (PFI) and local families are pursuing independent search initiatives. These efforts include coordinating with local fishermen to scan the waters. Meanwhile, media organizations and the Press Council have held solidarity events and prayer services to honor the missing reporters, including staff from Antara, Merdeka.com, iNews Media Group, and Anadolu Agency.
