Sunflowers reach peak bloom in Shinjuku and Sado

Various regions in Japan are experiencing peak summer flower seasons, with sunflowers serving as a major attraction.

In Tokyo, Shinjuku Central Park is expected to see its sunflowers reach peak bloom between mid-to-late August 2026. The park features four distinct varieties: Vincent (orange), Sunny Kids, Pinocchio Gold, and Sunbelievable. While most varieties peak in mid-August, Sunbelievable is expected to remain in bloom until approximately October. The park is also providing leaflets that connect the floral displays to Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ exhibited at the nearby SOMPO Museum of Art.

In Niigata Prefecture, Sado Island—often referred to as the ‘Island of Flowers’—is also seeing vibrant sunflower displays. Due to minimal impact from heavy rains this year, the flowers have grown well, creating a visual contrast against the blue sky and the sea. Other seasonal flora in the Sado area include Takasago lilies, tobacco flowers, and crepe myrtles.
