Summer sunflower blooms in Japan
Overview
Sunflower blooms are appearing across various regions in Japan during the summer season.
In late July, sunflower fields in Fujimino City and Kawagoe City began their seasonal displays. In Fujimino, the fields near the Manai no Yu hot-spring complex reached full bloom, while in Kawagoe, staggered flowering schedules were expected to extend the viewing period into mid-August.
By mid-August, sunflower displays expanded to Tokyo and Niigata Prefecture. In Shinjuku Central Park, multiple varieties are reaching peak bloom, with some expected to last until October. On Sado Island, sunflowers have grown well due to minimal heavy rain, contributing to the area’s reputation as the ‘Island of Flowers’ alongside other seasonal flora.
As of mid-August, blooming has also spread to Gifu Prefecture and the Kansai region. In Ogaki City, Gifu, the Ogaki Sunflower Field has begun its first round of blooms, where visitors can purchase cut flowers for a 250 yen cooperation fee.
In the Kansai region, several locations are attracting visitors: Tsurumi Ryokuchi in Osaka features windmills and staggered blooming, while the Izumi Recycling Environmental Park offers sunset views. Other notable spots include Mamioka Hills Park in Nara, which features smaller varieties, Yamaji Farm in Osaka, known for photography involving trains, and Blueme no Oka in Shiga, which offers a European-style pastoral landscape.
