Suno AI Music Platform Introduces Watermarking and New Copyright Rules

AI music startup Suno announced that it will embed watermarking and fingerprinting technology in all songs generated on its platform to help streaming services identify AI‑created audio. The company also tightened its download policy to block bulk distribution of tracks and updated community guidelines to ban deceptive audio, unauthorized voice or likeness cloning, and spam.

The measures follow a recent German court ruling that found Suno had used copyrighted material in training its models, as well as mounting copyright lawsuits and a past data‑breach that revealed training‑data sources. Suno’s co‑founder and CEO Mikey Shulman outlined four guiding principles, including an "Original Creation, By Design" approach that omits artist names from training metadata. Suno is working with third‑party services such as Audible Magic and Musixmatch’s Sentinel system to scan uploads for unauthorized use, and plans to add transparency tools for other platforms to flag AI‑generated songs.
